Have you ever dreaded going into work only to find yourself depressed at work once you get there? I have. Certain times of the year are worse than others. Time change, that one to me feels like the worse. Of course as a working mom, summer can also feel that way. On one hand you want your kids to go out and have fun but on the other hand it’s a painful reminder that you aren’t with them. Then of course time change just feels like you are at work from sun up to sun down – because you are.
Although I’m not a doctor, I do know that depression is a serious matter and it’s one that can affect many people. Of course there is a difference between just being sad and being full on depressed and then again, sometimes the atmosphere itself is depressing. The depressing atmosphere is what we’ll be exploring today. It’s the thought of knowing that while the sun may be shining outside, you aren’t going to see it. It’s knowing that it’s dark before you send your kids to school and too dark to see them playing outside once you come home. It’s a very common issue, know that you aren’t alone and know that there are steps that you can take to put some joy back into your day again.

Tips To Overcome Being Depressed At Work
*Finding A Balance Between Work and Family
Everyone talks about balance but chances are you haven’t found it yet. Please don’t let this get you down. Sometimes balance hurts because you are saying no to others, don’t let the fear of saying no keep you from your happiness. Set boundaries and standards that you refuse to cross. This balance could be that you won’t answer phone calls after a certain hour or that you won’t check your emails between certain hours. Yes, you may be on salary but unless the email is a matter of safety then it will be okay to eat a meal with your family before you respond to it.
*Eating Lunch Out Of The Office
You don’t even have to leave the parking lot. If your family can afford eating out then go for it, but eating out cost a lot. This post breaks that down. Just because you eat outside the office doesn’t mean you can’t bring a sack lunch. Go to the park. Go behind the building. Just find some time to get much needed sun and listen to the birds sing. Even taking five minutes to walk the parking lot before clocking back in will be enough to boost your spirits.
*Finding A Rewarding Cause To Works Towards
This could go hand in hand with the last bullet point but it’s worth talking about on it’s own. You see, working can become very depressing if you feel like you aren’t in the right job. You have enough sense to know that money is money and having money is better than quitting because you aren’t satisfied with your working environment. However, if you can find something to work towards it will help you push through the bad atmosphere. Work towards a class you want to take, work towards the mortgage being paid off, work towards paying for your daughter’s prom dress. Find something that works for you and then work for it.
*Creating Friendships Both Inside and Outside The Office
This can be intimidating. No one at your office is just like you and maybe your have nothing in common except that you don’t like your boss on Mondays and Friday at 2. That’s okay, build a friendship using that as a starting point. Maybe you get a few minutes to talk to the lady walking the parking lot with you, she may be from the business in the next suite but that doesn’t mean you can’t look forward to talking to her. Go to the gym each week at the same time, that’s not desperate it’s building relationships with people who have the same interest in you. Creating habits will help with that friendship building, you’ll come to expect seeing people at the same time each week and they’ll come to expect seeing you as well.
*Carving Out Time For Your Own Happiness
Nothing on the family calendar for Thursday night? Book it. Book it right now. Then take that time and tell everyone who ask that you already have plans. Don’t even worry about explaining your plans to them, you are busy and that’s all they need to know. Not sure what to do with that time? Take a bubble bath and paint your toenails a new color. You’ll feel better and that will help you get through the next day at work until the weekend begins. One way that I’ve noticed lifts my spirits is spending time with the Lord on a daily basis. If you are looking for a new and easy devotional that won’t take much time from your day then I’d like to invite you to read my life changing devotional, Beauty & The Broken.
*Understanding That Working Is A Choice, Not A Trap
This is a very hard truth of life. You may feel trapped in your job but coming to the realization that you are choosing to work can help combat that. You are choosing to work to better help your family, your boss is not demanding that you work. You have a choice, you could walk away from this job all together but by not you are making a choice to stay. The choice you make may be because you know your family needs the money but it doesn’t have to be a life sentence, it can be a stepping stone.
