I love it when God shows up big, especially through something so little. Tonight, I sat up in the bed with my children reading to them the story of the Last Supper and all of the events that took place that Easter week so many years ago. My children are 3 and 4. Typically bed time is silly but tonight they were so quiet, sitting there soaking up every word that I read to them from the Bible App Book for Kids and so I just kept reading.
Afterward, they had so many questions and our prayers were sweet and spirit lead. God convicted me big time too. As you grow up, as you age your heart becomes harder in ways that it shouldn’t. If you are like me, you may not even notice that it’s happening. Easter is upon us and I’ve thought mostly of Easter baskets and Easter outfits. I’ve thought little of Easter miracles. So, I was open in my prayer tonight, even with my children sitting there. It was longer than our typical lay me down to sleep sort of prayers that we do and yet the kids didn’t play.
I thought of Judas and of our Savior’s words “forgive them, they know not what they do.”. Have I become like Judas? Do I walk the walk and talk the talk but have earthly goals and desires that triumph over the unseen world and the battles that rage?
As a brand ambassador for Oriental Trading, some of the products in this post were given to me. You can rest assured they were not the driving force behind this post. Here I am, on a Saturday night, the house is still and I’m sharing this with you because the Lord shared it with me. Maybe you are like I often am, still searching for a lesson on Sunday morning, maybe this is meant for you.
Object Lessons For Kids: Salvation Not By Works
Bible Verse: Ephesians 2: 8-9
Fake Non-Edible Eggs
Open by asking your kids who would like a chocolate egg. Be sure to tell them that they are not allowed to eat the eggs until you say so. This is especially important if you have younger kids in your group. However, if you’ve been in kidmin for any length of time you know it’s not always the younger ones who act without thinking. Once kids start to raise their hands start or shouting that they want the chocolate eggs, begin passing out the fake eggs.
Once all the kids have their fake chocolate eggs begin to unwrap a real chocolate egg and eat it in front of them.
The Object Lesson For Kids
Explain to children that the Bible says we can’t work our way to Heaven. No matter how good we make look on the outside, God knows what’s in our heart. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God” Ephesians 2:8.
Some of us in this life are like the fake eggs, we look like a real egg but there’s nothing real about our salvation on the inside. Others around us may not notice and at times we may not care. We may be pretty and shiny, we may do a lot of really nice things, perhaps we even help out at church. That doesn’t mean that what we have is real.
The Bible says that we are all born into sin, sin is what keeps us from God. Some sins seem big like stealing something from the store. Other sins might seem little, like telling someone a lie. The Bible tells us that even the smallest of sins will keep us from going to Heaven. So, God sent his only begotten Son into the world to pay the price for our sins, by dying on the cross but that doesn’t mean that everyone goes to Heaven now.
The Bible also tells us that unless we confess and ask for forgiveness that we will go to Hell one day. We are to believe that God sent his only begotten Son to be born of a virgin, to die on the cross for us and we must believe that Jesus, his Son, rose again – we must believe that He came back to life.
But, the Bible also says that we can’t do this on our own. We don’t get salvation, the gift of life, the chance to go to Heaven one day and be with God by doing good things. We need the salvation of Jesus Christ. If we try and do good things to get to Heaven, it won’t work. The Bible says that there is a book, called the Lambs Book of Life and that it has everyone’s name in it. Everyone who believes in God and receives the salvation of Jesus Christ has their name in that book. If your name is not in that book, then you won’t be allowed to go to Heaven.
Wrapping It Back Up
Now would be a good time to encourage kids to talk to the KidMin leaders at your church if they have questions.
