I love this time of the year. My children and I get to go outside after being trapped inside all winter. The days are longer so the bedtimes are later, which means more family time. Dinners are outside and the kids are active all day long. One of the easiest things for my kids to do outside is play with sidewalk chalk. It’s a great way for them to build memories and it’s a great time to snap some colorful pictures. Here are five ways to play with sidewalk chalk that your kids will love and even you as the adult can join in on the action.
1. Play “Guess The Picture”
Have your children guess what the other child is drawing. Children around the age of 5 may get frustrated when the guess is wrong but having them take turns will allow them to see the humor when the guess isn’t right.
2. Copy the drawing
This one is great for those artist to be. Draw a simple picture and allow the child to copy the thing that you draw. Encourage the child that their drawing is great, even when it isn’t exactly the same.
This go to game is a long time favorite. There are many different ways to play this game but the important thing is that it gets your children moving. Think it looks easy? Then try it yourself. It really can become a great way to get your heartbeat up.
4. Draw Each Other
If your child enjoys tracing his or her hand then they will love having you trace their entire body. You can then encourage the children to draw faces and clothes on each other.
As a bonus you should allow the children to trace you, and mom, don’t be discouraged by the shape of your body. You know this is only a trace. It may just become a confidence building activity for you.
5. Teach Your Kids To Write Their Names
Every child at some point needs to learn how to write their names or how to spell the names of others, such as mom and dad and the names of their siblings. This is a great way to take the “school” out of learning. Create fun drawings around their names that represent who they really are. Butterflies and stars for your daughters and rocket ships and boats for your son.
