The benefits of going to the gym extend beyond weight loss. While certainly it is possible to loose weight by going to the gym you’ll need to find an additional reason to otherwise you’ll find that you become discouraged over time and eventually stop going all together.
The Many Benefits Of Going To The Gym and Why Busy Moms Should
*Escape From The Chaos
This is true whether you are a busy mom who works outside of the house but this is particularly true if you are a stay at home mom who needs an outlet. Escaping to the gym is a healthy way of giving back to yourself. Your children will appreciate the new you that follows. Overtime you may find that by going to the gym you’ll become more patient with your children and your spouse. You may also find that this is a great way to overcome depression that far too many stay at home moms will face.
Once again, this extends far beyond loosing weight. You may feel awkward and out of place at times. Perhaps you feel uncomfortable going out into public and your clothes don’t fit you as well as you would like. Going to the gym will send a boost of confidence your way as you discover what it is that you are capable of. You’ll gain a new sense of feeling accomplished that wasn’t there before. Yes, your clothes will start to fit you better but going to the gym is a long weight loss process and so don’t become discouraged if the results are showing themselves right away. Be proud that you are able to lift the weights. Be proud that you were able to run for two minutes straight. Be proud that you can jog for five minutes. Be proud that you can walk for two miles. Don’t compare yourself to the others who are in the gym with you. Be proud that you are not on the couch! Your confidence is going to show on your face first and others will take note of that.
*You’ll Be Able To Envision A Better You
When you first walk into that gym to work out you may be nervous and embarrassed, afraid that everyone is judging you. They are not. That judgement you feel is coming from you and you alone. Take that judgment and squash it, replace it with a vision for yourself. With each trip to the gym you’ll become a little bit better at the things you’ve tried. You may find that you don’t want to leave the gym and drink a soda late at night after walking for thirty minutes and then you may second guess yourself the next day when you go to pick that soda up, you’ll wonder if it’s worth it. Soon you’ll find that you are making better choices in every aspect of your life. You’ll trade the hamburger for a salad, the soda for water. You may even trade sitting down and watching TV for standing up and walking around during the show. You’ll do all of this because that judgement that you had towards yourself has been replaced by the vision you have for your life and you’ll love every moment of this because you know that a better you is coming out.
*You’ll grow stronger
Yesterday you may have felt out of breath as you climbed up the stairs, you may have even paused halfway up. That will change. One of the many benefits of going to the gym is that you’ll get stronger. Even if you haven’t started lifting weight you’ll find that you become stronger by doing other things. Your lungs will become stronger as you walk on the treadmill, pushing yourself to your limits and then coming back and doing it again. You’ll find that two minutes on the elliptical might feel like it’s killing you but the next time you’ll be able to stay on for three minutes and so forth. If you do go for the weights you may be over jealous and push yourself as far as you think that you can. When you wake up the next morning you will feel that pain but the secret is going back and lifting weights again. If you don’t work through the pain it’ll get worse so you’ll want to go back to those weights again and when you do, you’ll get stronger that way too.
*You’ll Learn That What Happens In The Kitchen Shows Up In the Gym
Sure, that pizza night is a great family tradition but you may find that you skip the pizza for a salad because the cholesterol levels aren’t worth the risk. You’ll pass up that fried chicken with mac and cheese for grilled chicken, quinoa and strawberries and you’ll love yourself for making those choices because you know that’s what it takes for the results that you want. What you eat today doesn’t affect your body today and what you drink today doesn’t stay with you today. It’s tomorrow that you’ll start thinking about and that means better choices in the kitchen. Balance is what it’s all about and that doesn’t mean two pizza slices so you don’t feel bad for eating three. Balance is when you know that you can’t stuff your face and expect it to go away when you run for five minutes two days from now. Balance is a little bit of everything everyday.
*You’ll Want Your Entire Family To Become Healthy
You’ll feel better and you’ll want your family to feel better. You’ll see that frozen nuggets aren’t the best choice and while you may be too busy to slow roast a chicken you’ll put the frozen dino shaped nuggets down and pick up the fresh hot rotisserie at the store instead. Your kids and husband may not be happy about it at first but you’ll know that their long term health is more important and you’ll know that their emotions shouldn’t be tied to their plates so you’ll continue investing into their health and you’ll do that because your name is Mom and you love them.
