Do you know of someone who has food allergies or is on a special diet? I do! As it turns out, several people in my family have food allergies and the thing is, not all allergies are the ones that we tend to think of. Some of the allergies in my own family include; corn, gluten (wheat, rye, barley, malt, etc.), tomatoes, mangoes, and cinnamon. At various points in time over the last few years we’ve also added dairy free into our lifestyles by doctor recommendation. I say all of that to say that allergies present themselves in ways that most people often don’t think of.
While you may look at a bag of sugar based sweets and think it’s allergen free a mother of a child with a red dye allergy may know otherwise.
As a mother of a child on a special diet I know that children don’t always understand having to pass up on the goodies. Sure, they begin to understand and even get to where they don’t argue so much but it’s always exciting when they are told that they can join in with the others. That’s one of the many reasons I’ve chosen to add non candy ideas for Halloween trick or treaters this year.
Here’s a few non candy ideas for Halloween trick or treaters that you could try including this year as well.
Glow In The Dark Toys
Reasons To Choose Non Candy Options
- Children with allergies can be safe
- Parents will appreciate non sugar options
- Teachers will appreciate non sugar options
- Kids will be just as happy (if not happier with these tiny toys)
- Many alternatives are better for your wallet
- What isn’t handed out can often be stored for next year
Still not convinced that toys and stickers are better than candy?
That’s okay! Not all children will share in this view as either, some things take time to change. Perhaps try mixing up your bucket this year by adding small trinkets in with the candy and let the kids choose which they prefer.
If you do choose to offer non candy options be sure to let parents and kids know by displaying a Teal Pumpkin somewhere easy to see or perhaps hanging a sign like this one where trick or treaters can easily see it.
