10 Places Busy Moms Almost Never Clean
Being a busy mom is no easy task. There are so many responsibilities that are always being added to your plate and by the time you get to crawl into bed at night you might just be glad that everyone made it through the day. Yet, with cold and flu season upon us now is the time to take precautions so that your family doesn’t end up sick. After all, with sick kids comes even more stress. How do I know this you ask? My daughter has been running a fever for a few days now and that dreaded cough has struck our house. You know the one that makes you stand outside you kid’s bedroom door at night and listen to make sure everything is okay? Yeah. That’s the one. When I hear that cough or when I hear people talk about how everyone they know is sick right now, a few things come to mind. Things like we need to be taking our vitamins or the kids need to be drinking plenty of fluids right now. I’m pretty sure those are normal mommy thoughts, you can correct me if I am wrong but then I also think about the fact my house needs a deep clean.
Why Does The House Need A Deep Clean?
It goes without saying, or at least I think it does, that germs are on everything! No. I’m not a germaphobic. Far from it actually. I can get dirty with the best of them come spring and summer. But then when the weather changes and the leaves start to fall and then the snow starts falling my family gets stuck inside. Sometimes days at a time. So if the house isn’t cleaned often (like really cleaned) we’ll end up staying pretty sick. Not something that is in our game plans.
10 Places Busy Moms Almost Never Clean
It’s true. We are all busy. Just with life really. Between washing laundry and answering phone calls for work or potty training your kids the day can seemingly get away from you before you know it and cleaning these areas of the house fall way down on the list.
I don’t always clean my windowsills but when I do it’s cold and flu season. Sorry, I couldn’t help myself. My windowsills actually get cleaned often. Why? Because that seems to be the perfect height for both of my kids and our cocker spaniel to touch with their dirty paws. Everything from chocolate to dirt seems to collect at this section of the house. I usually just take some Clorox wipes to them.
My husband is a mechanic and even though he says he cleans up before he comes home that doesn’t exactly mean that he is grease free. So, everyday on his way up the stairs he leaves behind a faint trail of grease from where he holds onto the banister with his hand. It’s not like a deep gray color (remember he does clean before he comes home) so you may not even notice it’s there until I clean the banisters. Then it’s like dusting an old picture frame. There is an obvious difference between the clean section and the dirty section.
3. Remote Control
Wasn’t there a survey done one time that said remote controls and cellphones never get cleaned? Like ever. I’m pretty sure that same survey said the remote control in a hotel room never has to be cleaned and therefore never is. Yuck! Make sure you wipe yours down please.
4. Kitchen Chairs
Way back when I was in high school I was working at a small town cafe. The store owner always made me get down on my knees and give a serious cleaning to the detail of the chairs. I couldn’t stand doing it at the time but now that I am a mom, I understand. It seems like no matter how often I clean the detailing on our kitchen table chairs that they are always filthy. Like seriously. Two kids under three years old and a small cocker spaniel puppy mean major mess.
5. Silverware Drawers
Hehe. I always think of my bestie when I open my silverware drawers now. She was over at my house one day when it was trashed. I mean, bad. I could have told the police someone came through and vandalized and they probably would have believed me. It looked like a tornado went from room to room. Anyways, we walked into the kitchen and I opened up the silverware drawer where every thing was put in it’s proper place and she gasped. She told me they had a condition for people like me. LOL! God bless her soul. I’m not sure she has ever managed to come by on a day where my house is clean (I promise I do clean it. Two kids under three and a cocker spaniel. remember?) but you better bet your big girl panties that my silverware drawer was clean that day.
ehh…… I have to go now. LOL! I know. I know! It’s horrible. You know it needs to be done. I know it’s need to be done. But why do we keep pushing this task off? It’ll save us money because we will easily be able to tell what is or isn’t going bad in there and it will keep you from buying too many of a certain item. Plus, you’ll be able to menu plan better and you get a feeling of pride when it is clean, even if it does only last a day or two. Oh. Maybe that’s why I don’t clean it more often. Okay. Moving on.
It doesn’t take much effort but a clean bookcase can make the entire room that it is in look a thousand times cleaner and yet for the most part I think we pile junk onto them defeating the purpose.
8. Toys (especially the actual toy box)
SAY WHAT!?! Look. You expect the day care or nursery to do it but why do we as moms not do it? It doesn’t take but just a spray or two of Lysol and it can keep the germs from spreading from one kid to another or keep the same kid from getting sick over and over. What’s that about the toy box? Have you looked down in there lately? Nope. Too scary? Look, if it’s too scary for you then it’s way too scary for your kids. There’s no telling what it down in there. Food? Broken Toys? The Boogey Man? I don’t know and the point is that if you don’t know either then you should really look into that.
9. Bathroom Drawers
Do you have that drawer in your kitchen that no one is supposed to open in front of company? Well. As embarrassing as that is, I bet it has nothing on the one in your bathroom. It never gets cleaned. Ever. And guess what, if company comes over and opens it up you may never know. Oh, but they will know. They will know just how nasty you really are.
10. The Knobs on Your Kitchen Cabinets
When was the last time you cleaned those? You think to wipe the counter tops down. You may even think to wipe your appliances down and the cabinets themselves. But think about it. The knobs. Do you ever? I mean do you ever clean those things? Have you ever had to open up a cabinet mid cooking? Did you wash your hands before touching that knob? If you don’t know or you think there might be a chance that some sort of nasty bug is hanging out in there then guess what. You should clean. One word. salmonella. I’m just saying, I would clean them if I were you.
