Hey everyone! My name is Alex Berger and I write the blog, The Berger Bungalow. My husband, Ian and myself purchased our first house a little over a year ago and it was one of the best decisions we have ever made, but there is a lot of work that goes into owning a house! I know that people tell you all the time about how much work and money it takes to own a house, but you never really understand until you are in the situation yourself.
When we first moved in, everything started to go wrong. We ended up with a leak that came down through our garage ceiling, a leak that came rushing through our garage walls (a separate leak than the first), and two leaking toilets that we had to replace. By the time we got through those four situations, we had no idea how we were going to keep up all of the work. Keep in mind that we hired a company to do a few renovations when we moved in: they took off our popcorn ceilings (which was a huge job), painted everything in our house, and then we also purchased new appliances for the kitchen. So, you can say that we were very ready for the expenses to slow down.
Luckily, they have slowed down a bit, but of course, when it comes to a house, there will always be some kind of expense. This upcoming year, we need to paint our exterior and replace some rotting wood, replace all of our shutters because they are starting to rot, replace our windows, fix our garage ceiling and wall (from where the leaks happened), and I really want to add granite to our kitchen! Most of this is pretty basic, but the windows are what really get me – I had no idea where to start when it came to researching and purchasing windows and window upgrades, so I wanted to partner with Lauren and write a short post about it.
How To Upgrade Your Windows
You can choose to replace your windows yourself, or you can hire someone to do it. Personally, I am not handy AT ALL, so I would go with the hiring route, but there are so many tutorials online that walks you through the process, so for someone that is handy, how hard can it be?!
Pros of hiring someone – It would get done right, you wouldn’t have to worry about it, and it’s a time saver for you.
Pros of doing it yourself – It is a lot cheaper, you would feel accomplished after you finish, and you would have more knowledge under your belt after you were done!
CHOOSE THE RIGHT WINDOWS
I had NO IDEA that there were so many windows out there. It is crazy! I talked with Lauren and she said that she went with windows without any grids on them. They are more modern compared to windows with grids and she saved money on them, so she decided to go for it! Now, with the windows without grids, her house looks cleaner from the inside, there is more sunlight, and from the outside, her house looks bigger. On top of all of that, her neighbors are now complementing them – which she was worried about since she is in a more traditional neighborhood, with an HOA (same for me). Her words are SO helpful because now I am considering windows without grids. On top of obvious things like that, you also need to consider energy-efficient windows, which to me, living in Atlanta, is a must.
Adding upgrades to your windows is a necessity for me and there are many ways to add them. For example, UHS Window Tinting and Blinds is an authorized window film dealer in the Metro Atlanta area. The full line of 3M window film products they carry include sun control, safety features, security, and also add a decorative feel to your windows. Living in Georgia, sun control is a huge added bonus because it gets very hot here in the summer. When using window films, you will reap the benefits and have lower utility bills and a more controlled climate. UHS Window Tinting and Blinds is a locally owned and operated company and they have more than 30 years of window tinting experience! On top of that, they have amazing reviews – the owner, Matt challenges customers to go online and find a bad review! Another upgrade you can add to your windows is blinds, which they offer, as well. If you are interested in window tinting, and/or blinds, reach out to UHS Window Tinting and Blinds for a free estimate!!
Doing home updates can be nerve-wracking and costly, but when you do your research on the companies you hire and the products you install, you will be more than fine! Do you have any house projects coming up? Let me know on the conversation happening right now on Facebook!
